BESTIARY: SAFEZONE
→ BESTIARY: SAFEZONE
There are many critters that run around Adstring, and they should be noted! If you would like to add something to the bestiary, please reply to this entry in a comment using the form. If there is something you'd like to keep "unknown" for now, simply put that in the section.
Creatures too closely resembling humans (either in behavior/thoughts or in appearance) may not be accepted. If it could, potentially, be a playable character, it is not for the bestiary.
For the sake of other players' reference, since pictures are always helpful, please make a 100x100 icon for it with no border if possible. Spore's Trial Version is a good way to create creatures, if it suits your fancy.
KEY
- Creatures that can be found in the Safezone are noted in yellow.
- Water dwellers, like the Squid, which reside in the ocean and river of the Safezone are noted in blue.
- Some of the wilder or larger creatures can also be found in the Safezone areas bordering the Wastes, or on the norther outskirts where the caves and cliffs are. Those are noted in light green.
Monsters living in the WASTES can be found [HERE]

![]() Classification: Mammal. Physical Characteristics: A beautiful white horse with a soft, long sky blue (almost white) tail and mane. The look in its black eyes almost always seems to be begging for people to ride it. Diet: Carnivorous (preferably of the human variety). Habitat: Wherever there's a body of water nearby. Whether it's a small pond, river, or lake. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: They lure people to ride them with their appearances, behavior and a longing look that could almost be hypnotized. Once one mounts the horse however, it's up to the horse on when the rider is able to get off. It may be for a scare or a fun ride, but more often than not they take the rider into the nearest body of water and drag them down as deep as possible. There, while drowning, the victim is consumed. It's possible to break the spell when caught on a brook horse if you have the iron items to make a cross. |
![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: Looking nothing more than a strange lumbering creature with their long snouts and large bodies, these creatures are nevertheless very graceful in the water. Completely covered in a black and white coat, their nose is somewhat pre-hensil, and their tails are short and stubby. Diet: Dreams, their favorites being horrible nightmares that tend to keep people awake for fear of having them. Habitat: Wherever there are people. Lifespan: Unknown. Additional Information: Bakus are thought to merely be creatures of myth based on an animal known as the Tapir, mostly appearing in old folklore. These tales range from portraying the creature as a monster that comes upon helpless sleeping humans to devour their dreams, to something more benevolent that comes to eat bad dreams that plague minds. They are silent and surprisingly graceful creatures that creep into the bedrooms of sleeping individuals when they sense a something terrible within the minds of a dreamer. Walls and locked doors are unable to keep them out, as they hold some power that allows them to pass through solid objects; perhaps the same kind of power that allows them to pull these nightmares from within a person's mind, and into something solid they can eat. They are increasingly rare within the city due to hunting. Larger image |
![]() Classification: Magical Creature Physical Characteristics: A boggart is a shapeshifter, one that transforms into whatever the person who has discovered it fears the most. Because of this, no one knows a boggart's true form. Diet: Unknown, but they are affiliated with 'fear'. Habitat: They prefer cupboards, closets, and dark spaces. Lifespan: Unknown. Additional Information: It is possible to defeat a boggart by using the magical spell 'Riddikulus!', which causes the boggart to shift shape into something humorous. Since laughter is the key to destroying it, performing the spell enough times will cause the boggart to explode into smoke. |

![]() Classification: Crustaceans Physical Characteristics: The average body length is 16 inches (40 cm) and a leg span of more than 3 feet (.91 m) and a weight of 9 pounds (4.1 kg). May grow larger due to the environment. It can be divided into a front section, with ten legs, and an abdomen. The front-most pair of legs have large claws strong enough to open a coconut. Diet: Omnivore. Mostly coconuts or other fruit, but it will also eat laves, rotten fruit, eggs, and dead animals. Habitat: Underground burrows and rock crevices Lifespan: More than 30 years. Additional Information: While the coconut crab will stay away from humans, if threatened, they will not hesitate to pinch a person with their claws. Coconut crabs are edible and go well with butter. |
![]() Classification: Shadow Physical Characteristics: The Maya shadows resemble black blobs with arms and a mask sticking out. They wear the mask on their "face" in the middle of their body. Diet: Minds of living people (their victims turn into a vegetative state.) Habitat: Dark environments. Can be found during nighttime only. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: It's surprisingly agile for something that doesn't have legs to run on. It's prone to attacking upon spotting a person (unless they can sense said person is way stronger than they are, then they run away in the opposite direction as fast as possible.) Aside from physical attacks, they can also use small bufu (ice) spells. Larger image |
![]() Classification: Plant Physical Characteristics: Vines similar to ivy or grape, that thicken with age and develop bark. Younger, green vines are the only ones that can move. The leaves are broad, with five points, and very dark. They grow berries in bunches, like grapes, but these berries remain very small and are hard and white. They are edible, with a taste between grape, blueberry, and apple. The only real weakness is fire...it will retreat from high heat sources. Diet: Photosynthesis Habitat: Prefer somewhere that allows the vines to climb, offering better access to the sun and better protection to the berries. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: The vine does not seem predatory, but it will grab at people. The thin, younger vines may be easily broken if you catch them quickly, but the stronger, thicker green vines are very hard to break. There are no thorns or the like, but they quickly grow shoots to help hold things in place. The closer to berries you are, the faster it reacts to movement to grab and hold it. Struggling makes it tighten faster, but once it has a hold, it doesn't like to let go. |

![]() Classification: Fish Physical Characteristics: Seemingly a cross between a fish and a turtle, this creature has a bony armoured shell for a body and a face reminiscent of a snapping turtle, though it otherwise looks like a fish. Ranging from 10-30 feet (3-10 metres), they possess a large mouth made up of body structures that resemble a beak. Diet: Carnivorous Habitat: Though dunkleosteus prefers deeper waters, smaller specimens can be found all the way into the surf line. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: N/A Larger image |

![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: Has long, soft, reddish-brown fur on most of its body and blackish fur on its short legs. It has a light face with tear markings and robust cranial-dental features. The light face has white badges similar to those of the red panda, but it is possible that each individual can have distinctive markings. Their roundish head has medium-sized upright ears and a black nose. Their long bushy tail has alternating red transverse black rings and the end of the tail is black. Diet: Omnivore Habitat: Various. Prefer forested areas rich with bamboo and insects, though can be found in urban areas. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: They are very social creatures, and will often form a strong bond with their owners. |
![]() Classification: Astral Amphibian Physical Characteristics: A small Salamander no bigger than a hand with red and black skin, coated in astral flames. Diet: Insects. Habitat: Generally keeping towards dark places, under rocks and leaves. They also like to build colonies under houses and in crawl spaces in homes. Lifespan: Upwards of 40 years. Additional Information: Fire Salamanders cannot harm you with their flames if there are only a few present. Though, when agitated and in large groups(~30-100+) their flame become corporeal and they can spark and become rather dangerous. Fire Salamander infestation is the leading cause of inexplicable house fires, even if they are ridiculously cute and generally well-tempered. |
![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: In shape, they appear to be normal cows, but their bodies are leaner than normal cows and their necks are somewhat longer than normal. They are pastel colored-- blue for blueberry, pink for strawberry, pale orange for peach. They are surprisingly fast creatures, particularly compared to normal cows, as they need to be able to outrun the killer rabbits and yodare cats to survive. They give both meat and milk just like regular cows, but the milk has a slightly fruitier taste to it in association with the type of cow. Diet: Herbivore. Mainly leaves and fruit, though grass will suffice Habitat: Near fruit groves, generally near the edges of the Safezone away from human living spaces Lifespan: Up to 20 years Additional Information: Fruit cows are gentle creatures by nature, herbivores not prone to attacking other living things. The bulls do lock horns during mating season, however. It would be possible to domesticate them, but in the wild, they would flee from humans. |

![]() Classification: Plant Physical Characteristics: A woody epiphytic vine that can climb buildings, trees and walls up to 20 meters in height. It sprouts long dangling vines that arch away from its support structure, creating an attractive canopy with a dense covering of leaves. Large clusters (20 - 50 cm long) of blue, white or pink flowers with a sweet, grape-juice scent open in April or May. Diet: Although ghost wisteria photosynthesize like any plant, they supplement their micronutrient and moisture needs by snaring unwary animals. Habitat: Poor, rocky soil or broken concrete; ghost wisteria often sprout from cracks in walls or cliffs, twining up the surface as they grow. They can be found at the edges of the Safezone and out into the Wastes. Lifespan: Perennial; can live for 50 or more years if conditions remain favorable. Additional Information: The last quarter of each dangling vine is bare of leaves, sporting hooked thorns 2 - 3 cm in length evenly spaced around the stem. Exerting force against the vine, for instance by tugging to free clothing or hair from a thorn, causes the vine to violently contract, snaring limbs or bodies and (in large specimens) sometimes hauling its prey into the air as it tightens. The pressure of large ghost wisteria vines can break bones or suffocate its prey on the spot. Once an animal has been captured, small parasitic roots grow from the base of each thorn into the prey's flesh. They absorb liquid and nutrients throughout the decomposition process, extending through the corpse until it has been wholly eaten away. The tiny rootlets sprout new leaves as they are exposed to light, leaving the shape of the prey outlined in a netting of tiny twigs around bone, often still clad in scraps of fur or clothing. |

![]() Classification: Mammals. Physical Characteristics: Massive beasts of Hell, a fully grown Hellhound can stand shoulder to shoulder with your average male human. They are invisible to the normal individual, but those with supernatural abilities or a damned soul will be able to see a large shaggy dog with black fur, long teeth and claws, and blood-stained eyes. They come in a variety of “breeds” and shapes, but mostly resemble larger dog breeds (German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, etc). Diet: Carnivore. Habitat: They enjoy wide spaces. Lifespan: Unknown. Additional Information: Hellhounds are impossibly loyal to their masters, once trained. They will listen to every and any command you give them so long as you are the one who raised them. They also have the ability to remove souls and are ridiculously good at fetch. Nothing can beat the nose of a Hellhound once they’ve got your scent. |

![]() Classification: Water sprite Physical Characteristics: Child-sized humanoids, their bodies are similar to monkeys or frogs. Their face is like a tortoise and they have a thick shell on the back and scaly skin that ranges from green to blue to yellow. There is a water-filled depression on the top of their head, and this water is what kappas gain their strength from, so if it is spilled, they are weakened and may even die. Diet: Carnivore. Small children, but may eat adults as well. Habitat: Deep in the lake, small ones may be found in the river. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: Highly mischievous, they enjoy playing pranks on people that can range from looking up a woman's skirt to stealing food and children. |
![]() Classification: Rodent, Mammal Physical Characteristics: Classic rabbit, most commonly see with white fur. Adults seem to be from 3-6 pounds, short-haired. While they look like normal rabbits, they have sharp teeth that line the top and bottom of their mouths. Two long fangs are the most obvious feature along with its wide-opening mouth. Diet: Carnivore. Anything that has blood. Habitat: More akin to the outer regions of the City and very numerous in the Wastelands. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: Tame unless provoked. Easy to mistake with normal rabbits. Use caution when approaching any rodent. Unknown if carrying disease. |

Classification: Beast/Animal Physical Characteristics: These massive snow rabbits can grow to be the size of a grizzly bear, and have a attitude and viciousness that can equal or even rival that of said grizzly. They're highly intelligent and very capable fighters and don't take too well to anyone or anything invading their territory. Mostly seen standing on two legs, the Lapahn species can roam on all fours for increased speed, agility, and maneuverability - especially while jumping and running. Their forearms have sharp, non-retractable claws and their teeth and long and pointed. Diet: Carnivorous Habitat: Extreme cold, preferably the caves or winter months when snow is plentiful. Can be seen during late and sometimes early fall months, when the air is dry and cool as well. Lifespan: Unknown within canon, but could be several decades, not exceeding perhaps four. Additional Information: Lapahns are pack/group hunters. It is very rare to see one alone. Because of this, and the fact they are so intelligent, a direct confrontation is unwise and plainly suicidal. ![]() Classification: Shark Physical Characteristics: An enormous, powerful shark measuring 40-60 feet (14-18 metres) long, megalodon resembles an oversized great white shark. Their bodies are grey with white undersides, and their teeth can reach half a foot in length. Diet: Anything and everything. There’s very little that such a massive shark can’t or won’t eat. Habitat: Megalodon prefer deep water, but will stray close to shore on occasion. Lifespan: Many years, possibly a century. Additional Information: The water just off the shore is too shallow to encounter a megalodon, but venturing too close to the sudden drop off will expose characters to the threat of a giant shark attack. |
![]() Classification: Magical creature Physical Characteristics: The Mirthful Mimic appears to be composed of concrete, fiberglass and metal armature with trace quantities of paint. Oversized, brightly colored and realistically weatherbeaten, they look like dilapidated statues built to decorate a circus or amusement park. Mimics can be distinguished from genuine statues at a distance in two ways. First, they often smell of blood. Second, they tend to be surrounded by areas of greater damage and decay. Diet: Unknown. Habitat: Abandoned areas, especially playgrounds and amusement parks. Uncommon. Lifespan: Unknown. Additional Information: Mimics are fast, powerful, resilient and viciously bloodthirsty. They have one fatal weakness: they cannot move when observed. Breaking eye contact or blinking will allow the Mimic to approach. Mimics are extremely fast and can cover up to five meters during one blink. If they are allowed to come within range of a living creature, they will always attack the face and eyes first. Once they have blinded their victim, they will methodically de-joint and disassemble the rest of the body before resuming their masquerade. |

![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: A black fluffy long-snouted creature which burrows in dirt as if it were water. Diet: Omnivore Habitat: Nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface and produce six to eight young in a litter. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: Although nifflers are gentle and even affectionate, they are strongly attracted to anything shiny, and can be difficult to control. Because of this, they can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in a house though they can be very useful for finding treasure. Larger image |

Classification: Yokai Physical Characteristics: Oni are super large in general; they stand tall ( about seven feet or taller ) and have a wide build. Their most distinguishing features are their horn(s) on their head and large spiked iron club that they wield. Their skin can come in a variety of colors but the most commonly depicted is red. Diet: They have a nasty habit of eating people. Habitat: Anywhere that's habitable. Lifespan: A really long time. Additional Information: Though incredibly strong, Oni are typically not very smart. They can speak basically and understand human languages but are very easy to trick or escape if need be. Larger image |

![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: Looks like a cross between a labrador retriever and a polar bear, stands about 5’7 to 5’11 on all fours or closer to 7’ on hind legs, white fur, thick body mass with fat layers good for surviving in polar climates (though not as good for summer). Rear legs, tail, snout, and ear more resemble a dog’s, front legs and body are more like a polar bear’s. Diet: Carnivorous, but will mostly stick to fish. Habitat: Can be seen out and about during cold, winter conditions, otherwise they keep hidden deep in the cave systems where it’s cool, even during the summer. Lifespan: Unknown, but potentially between 20 and 40 years. Additional Information: Can be tamed and ridden, best to start when they’re young. Like dogs, they’re very loyal to their owners and can be highly protective of them. They are also capable of tracking someone’s scent in a blizzard. Larger image |
![]() Classification: Trickster Spirit Noise Physical Characteristics: A long-limbed green and yellow fox with 1 to 3 tails. When they're mimicking someone, they look like the person they're mimicking, except their faces are covered by a fox mask. Diet: Human souls Habitat: Anywhere there are negative humanoid emotions. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: Psychedelifox's are born from negative emotions and eat human souls to gain further powers and survive, thus they're usually found close to humans. Though they can mimic someone's form, the mimicry is rudimentary at best, with a fox mask covering the face. They have several powers available to them, including shape-shifting into various forms to hide or for defense. They cannot be tamed, as they have no thought process except to attack people and devour souls. |

![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: These sheep look very much like the Suffolk Sheep with the white world being multicolored like a rainbow. These animals can weigh between 100 - 200 pounds. The males will grow horns. Diet: Herbivore Habitat: The sheep arrived during an event. They thrive well in a domestic environment but small herds of no more than 10 can be found by the wastes. Lifespan: 6-12 years Additional Information: The wool can be sheared for textiles (it can be difficult to dye into one color) and the meat is edible. Other than the wool, they behave and function like the domestic sheep. Larger image |
![]() Classification: Undead Physical Characteristics: ReDeads appear humanoid and partially skeletal, standing just under six feet in height on average. They seem somewhere between decayed and mummified, with faces that look almost like masks and always exposed teeth. They move slowly and emit a high pitched scream that stuns their enemies. Diet: The life energy of anything they can grab. Habitat: Mostly the outer edges of the safezone, and in the wastelands. They are only seen at night or in low-light conditions such as storms, or in abandoned buildings or other dark sheltered areas. Lifespan: Unknown. Additional Information: Their screams paralyze, and ReDeads then latch onto their prey and begin to drain their life forces. Light and anything to do with the sun will freeze them temporarily but they are mostly impervious to damage. They are very slow so they're easy to run from if paralysis can be avoided. Larger image |

![]() Classification: Invertebrate, Marine Cephalopod Physical Characteristics: The colossal squid is like a normal squid with a larger, more robust mantle, two dorsal fins, eight legs and two tentacles. However its beak is longer and sharper, and its tentacles are equipped with sharp hooks - and it is estimated to be between 46-52 feet long. Diet: Carnivorous, anything from fish to whatever falls into the cove. Habitat: The ocean, specifically a cove it's claimed. Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: Though this species normally exists in deep-sea environments, this particular squid has adapted to the lesser water pressure of the cove in Adstringendum. It seems to be shy and stays mostly in the deeper waters, but may come near the surface in its quest for food. Semi-adopted by the residents of Adstringendum as a local curiosity and pseudo-mascot, the squid has been given many names by different people. Frequently attacked by the foolhardy and adventuresome, the squid seemingly refuses to be killed. **Squid-tan is our mascot, so there will be no killing of him/her. There is only one; however, smaller squids do exist in the ocean. The smaller squids can be killed (for food or pleasure), but not "Squid-tan."** Larger image |

![]() Classification: Draconis Physical Characteristics: A small green dragon (though some may red or cerulean blue), slightly smaller than a cat. It has dark red spikes that run down it's back on an orange stripe that starts at the head, two dark red spiraled horns, and an arrowhead tail point of the same red. Its head is very round with large nostrils and yellow eyes with vertical slit like pupils raised above it's head. It has a white chin and underbelly. The mouth marks about the horizontal half-point of the head. Diet: Carnivore: Scraps and whatever it manages to take down, though humanoids are not in their diet. Habitat: Various Lifespan: Unknown Additional Information: They hunt using a sniper shot, shooting their flames with pin point accuracy. They can shoot ten of these before needing to recharge, however they also tend to travel in packs. They spend a lot of energy wrestling with their pack like siblings over who gets what piece. They do enjoy getting scratched, and will be friendly towards people that feed them, but they are small enough to get into small spaces... like your pantry. It is not impossible to train one, but being very rambunctious and easily distracted by shiny things it is a challenge to do so. |

![]() Classification: Mammal Physical Characteristics: Has the appearance and size of a young kitten except with a grotesque face featuring large hungry eyes and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Diet: Anything it can get it's teeth and claws on. Enjoys things that it can tear to shreds. Habitat: Urban. Abundant in recently abandoned areas with things to rip apart but are rare in the wastelands. Lifespan: Unknown. They also eat each other so they don't last long. Additional Information: They drool excessively; especially when angered or excited (easy to do since they seem to understand human language and behavior). Their teeth also fall out easily but grow back quickly too like a shark's. They become intensely focused on tearing something to shreds so it is wise to carry a decoy object to toss at them while you make your getaway. |
